Curl Architects is a small and dedicated architecture studio with a love for creating functional and uplifting spaces that enrich how we live.
We offer expertise across a range of architectural services including feasibility, design, documentation and contract administration. Our process is developed through discussion, experimentation and close collaboration between client, consultant, architect and builder.
The studio is run by James Robinson, an Architect with experience in residential and commercial architecture. Prior to starting his own practice, James was a project architect at one of Sydney’s leading architecture firms.
James is involved in every stage of a project to ensure a smooth process from start to finish. Only a few projects are taken on to provide a personal service to all clients. This allows us to dedicate the time every good building needs.

Process
We begin by listening
We take the time to understand your needs, budget and the unique qualities of your site before we start designing.
Following an initial briefing process, we use traditional hand drawing and modern digital simulation tools to translate our understanding of your brief into a passionate and rigorous design solution.
We use 3D visualisation as a design tool on every project. We try to visualise space and scale, texture and materials to provide clarity and understanding of the architectural concept.
We help you deliver design plans that you can afford to build
We enjoy designing to a budget. Your finances are a design constraint that creates unique and interesting outcomes. One of our biggest roles as an architect, is to work with your vision for your home and how much you want to spend on it. We prefer to be honest upfront and have difficult conversations to avoid disappointment later.
Documentation and drawings
We use 3D (CAD) software to create the drawings and documents required for a built outcome. Throughout this process, we refine the architecture and address the statutory and environmental processes and facilitate consultant input.
Guiding you through the build
We guide you through each stage of the construction process. We collaborate closely with master builders and trades to achieve high quality outcomes that are economically, environmentally and functionally considered.
Sustainability
We design buildings using appropriate orientation, natural ventilation, solar protection, and upscaled insulation. We consider the benefits of using a clear construction methodology as well as using sustainably sourced and long-lasting materials. We are respectful of the environment, community and acknowledge our potential impact on the earth.
